It’s important to submit your application for Social Security benefits as soon as you realize that you are disabled and won’t be able to work for a period of at least 12 months. The way you submit that application largely depends on which program you can qualify for. If you’re applying for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits – also known as SSDI – that application can be filed in person at your local Social Security office, it can be filed over the phone with your local Social Security office, or it can be completed online on the Social Security Administration’s website, socialsecurity.gov.
if you’re applying for Supplemental Security Income – known as SSI benefits – that application can also be submitted in person at your local Social Security office or over the phone with Social Security. It can sometimes be submitted online on Social Security’s website. If you: are between the ages of 18 and 65, are United States resident, have never applied for or received SSI benefits before, and have never been married, you may be able to submit your SSI application online. However, if there is one of those parameters you don’t meet, you will not be able to submit your SSI application online.
If you’re disabled and unable to work for a period of at least 12 months, contact a local attorney today to discuss your options on how to apply for Social Security benefits.
