New Year, New Family?

With the turn of a calendar to a new year, many of us are excited about the year ahead. We have reviewed the past year and thought about what we can do differently in the new year to improve our lives. For some, the new year may bring a combination of hesitation and excitement. Perhaps you are expecting changes to your family tree this year: a marriage, a divorce, or even a new baby.

If you are expecting changes to your family tree, one of the best things you can do to prepare for those changes is to ensure your family is taken care of in the event of your incapacitation or death. While not many people like to think about incapacitation or death, the fact remains that they are still issues that need to be dealt with – and preferably dealt with before they come.

Marriage

If you and your significant other are getting married this year, your lives are about to change. After the wedding and the honeymoon bliss dies down a bit, you both need to engage in discussions about wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare surrogates. Romantic? No. Important? Yes.

New Baby

If you and your significant other are expecting a baby this year, either through childbirth or adoption, it is imperative that you sit down and discuss your estate plans. Bringing a new life into your family is wonderful. What is even more wonderful is making sure that baby is protected in the event anything happens to you and/or your spouse. You will need to discuss pre-need guardians, monetary issues, and how to leave your assets if you pass away.

Your most important job is about to become parenting a little one. Congratulations! Take the time now to prepare for Baby’s future.
