When applying for Social Security disability benefits, there are a few steps you can take to give the best chance of approval. You may have heard most cases get denied the first time. That, unfortunately, tends to be true. However, if you take proper steps, you can put yourself in the best position to win.
Communicate with SSA
First, you want to make sure you respond to all requests from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Often, SSA (or Disability Determination Services/DDS) allows ten days to respond to a mailed letter. This usually means as soon as you receive the letter, you should try to take the action requested. They may ask for a phone call, a signature on a form, or a completed questionnaire. If you need more time to complete a form or questionnaire, call the number on the bottom of the letter. In our experience, as long as you stay in contact with SSA/DDS, they will grant an extension.
Provide All Information
Second, you want to provide all information SSA/DDS is requesting. This can be a list of your doctors, a list of recent hospitalizations, completing forms about your pain and functioning, and more. SSA/DDS is responsible for processing your claim, but they do not know your treatment record or your functioning levels until you tell them.
Be Honest
This may go without saying, but we must mention it. Do not exaggerate or downplay your conditions and the impact they have on your functioning. Remember, SSA is also reading your medical records. They review what you say your limitations are, but they rely on the medical records to support their finding of disability. This means you need to be honest, as dishonesty (either in the form of exaggeration or down-playing) can cut your credibility.
