When Does Social Security Disability Pay

If you’ve been approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you may be wondering when Social Security Disability pays the benefits. The timing of your Social Security benefit payment will depend on a few things, including which program you were approved for, and when your birthday is.

SSDI Payments

If you were approved for SSDI benefits, your monthly payment date depends on your birthday. If your birthday is between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will get paid on the second Wednesday each month. If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th of the month, you will get paid on the third Wednesday of the month. If your birthday is between the 21st and 31st of the month, you will get paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

SSI Payments

If you were approved for SSI benefits, you will receive your monthly benefits on the first of each month. If the first of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, your benefits will be paid on the last workday before the weekend or holiday. This is why the January payment for SSI benefits always falls on December 31; January 1 is considered a holiday.

SSDI and SSI Payments

If you were approved for both SSDI and SSI, you will receive your benefits on the third of each month.

Missing a Payment?

If you do not receive your payment on the expected date, the Social Security Administration recommends that you wait three additional mailing days before contacting them. For the 2020 scheduled payment dates, see the chart here.
