A question I often get from potential clients is where to file for Social Security Disability. Depending on which program you may qualify for, you can apply online, over the phone, or in-person at your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.
Filing for SSDI or SSI
If you want to apply for SSDI, you can submit an application online directly with SSA. You can also apply in-person or over the phone with your local SSA office. All applications ask the same questions about your conditions, your treating doctors, clinics, and hospitals, and any medications you are on. They also ask about your work history for the prior fifteen years.
Prior to submitting the application, I typically tell clients to make a list of all of their conditions. Included in the list should be any and all side effects or problems the conditions cause them. Next, they need to make a list of all medical providers they have seen over the last year. This list should include emergency room visits, and doctors they may have seen only once. The next list is a list of their current medications, who prescribes them, and any side effects they cause. The last preparatory item is finding their most recent resume. If the resume does not include all jobs for the past fifteen years, they will need to make a list of those as well.
Once clients have collected the above information, they are ready to submit their online, telephonic, or in-person SSDI or SSI application.
